About The Artwork

This work is inspired by the loneliness of a couple in their late age. They are spending their evening sitting together without chatting, but in the company of their kids' photos. The woman's day dreams of her youth are symbolized by the inverted figure. Also if you look closely you will see a parrot like bird crouching in a niche, perhaps a faint suggestion of some hidden hopes that are keeping them alive. This symbolism is depicted through my abstract expressionist style. The choice of colors and flimsy texture accentuate the expression. The most difficult part was seeking the balance of light and shade to bring about the life like atmosphere without making the painting representational.

I am an Architect by profession. After a long and rewarding career in USA, I have returned to India with my wife. Due to my childhood passion of drawing and painting I have taken a full retirement from my Architectural career and now solely devote my time to Paintings. I use a number of mediums, which include, pencils, watercolor pencils, acrylic, airbrush and digital stylus. I never use photographic or ready to use images in my digital work. Most of my work can be categorized as conceptual abstract expressionism. However, like the modern movement, I believe that a painting is a form created by an artist on a two dimensional surface. This form must be fully developed in it self and interesting and engaging in the eyes of the observer. Granted, the observer's receptors can be engaged in numerous ways and methods, I try to create that interest by taking the observer on an intimate journey of color, texture, transparency, tones, spaces, voids, solids, objective and non objective figures / symbols that may articulate my inner feelings. The process is normally spontaneous, which should show through my paintings. I would take familiar figures like a human face and break it down in to non objective /objective shapes and symbols. I can not escape the feeling content in my work. However I try not to lose my focus on the form. I believe the spontaneity riding on inner feelings shapes the outcome.
