Having lived in multiple countries, and the struggle to pinpoint a place to call home, my practice denotes a constant search for grounding in my study of symmetry, repetition and the composition of each piece around a mathematically plotted grid. By introducing the fluid shape of the circle, I challenge the rigid order of the base grid and use the deep black circles as grounding elements to visual simplicity. The layered process within this abstract painting builds a dialogue between emergence and disappearance by revealing the previous layers of paint through sanding and scratching. This piece is a documentation of journey on a base grid creating a map out of geometric shapes for me to navigate, deconstruct and simplify. The small map symbols within the symmetrical painting are references pulled directly form geographical maps, as well as the brown scribbles representing contour lines which are conventionally found on maps. The subtle lines of colours express an underlying emotion of the moment, and the faint blue line reveals final journey through the constructed 'map'.

Sabrina Brouwers is a truly international artist - half-German, half-Italian, and now living and working in South London. Working mainly with abstract paintings in acrylic, her style has been strongly influenced by her nomadic upbringing and her fascination with design principles. Her paintings are largely monochrome and feature geometric shapes that repeat over a grid system, all plotted with a mathematical precision. She states that the unnaturally rigid grid is a mirror to our urban landscapes, while circles are introduced to juxtapose with and challenge this sense of order. Sabrina has an interesting background, having grown up between different countries before studying a bachelors in fine art at Falmouth University in 2019. She has since developed her style of geometric abstract painting, studying a postgraduate diploma in graphic design at the University of Art in London. Sabrina now works as both an artist and a graphic designer, and the influence of these two differing disciplines is clear to see throughout her paintings.
