ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Margherita Sarfatti (Venice, 8 April 1880 - Cavallasca, 30 October 1961) She comes from a family of high Jewish society. She was an intellectual, writer, collector and critic of art of Jewish origin, famous for being Mussolini's lover for two decades. In 1918 her son lost his life in the First World War. In 1920, her Milan hall was frequented by many intellectuals and artists. In the same period she becomes the director of Gerarchia, the journal of political theory founded by Benito Mussolini. In 1922, with the gallerist Lino Pesaro and the artists Anselmo Bucci, Leonardo Dudreville, Achille Funi, Gian Emilio Malerba, Pietro Marussig, Ubaldo Oppi and Mario Sironi founded the so-called Novecento, whose works were first exhibited in 1923 in the gallery Pesaro of Milan. Because of their adherence to fascism (in 1925, the Manifesto of the Fascist intellectuals was signed), some artists moved away from it, not sharing Sarfatti's project of contributing to the birth of a "fascist art". Nevertheless, in the following sample of 1926 and in spite of the controversies, still the majority of the important Italian artists still approach. After 20 years, when realizing that Mussolini supports Hitler she flees to Montevideo. She is merged with Alfredo Ambrosi's work "Aeroritratto di Mussolini" as it represented the futuristic and fascist art of that moment.
