About The Artwork

This is the second in my series of a post COVID art created to document the new reality of our existence. it depicts how COVID 19 has affected our everyday life.’ This painting is executed with oil paints on canvas. My art It tends towards figurative, expressionism movement of the late 1940s and modernism. It has a highly textured surface executed with a painting knife. it creates a feeling of looking at a three dimensional painting. For this painting I used oil because of its slow drying process and flexibility. The key or predominant colour is yellow ochre tinted to provide soft supporting background figures to the main figure of a woman returning home from her farm with fire wood on her bicycle carrier and three children riding with her. They are all masked up to prevent infection; hence the title Masked to Survive. The painting is unframed. However, The texture on the surface is created by etching out with a painting knife, from a heavy paint application, crisscrossing marks on the background and on the figures. This is a predominant concept in most of my works. The edges are properly finished in black and may not require additional frame if one choses that option. It can be mounted like any other art work, no special attention is required. The series of paintings documents history for future reference since I strongly believe that art has a purpose other than being decorative. I draw inspiration from people .their interaction with the environment. Pictures and events I see daily do have influence on my art. Her sad expression is that of despair but with a determined boldness to conquer her adversity.
