About The Artwork

This work is a realist painting of a crudely modeled female figure. What she is holding in her arms is ambiguous. Is it a baby, a gourd, or an egg? The realist portrait gives a new status to this small figurine. It gives it a new importance, brings into focus the model's features, and turns it into an allegoric figure. Was it painted because it represents a goddess figurine? Using Play-doh as the material for the sculpture makes it contemporary further blurring the status of the female figure - is it a goddess or was it modeled by a child? I Iove to play with the non-noble status of Play-doh which automatically lightens the seriousness of the painting and brings in fun colors. This was painted directly from life. This acrylic-on-paper painting comes with a white border. The white paper border has some blemishes from removing the masking tape. These should be covered up when framing. This does not affect the painted surface.

Shipping & Returns

Antoine Quairiat is a Belgian painter currently residing in Buenos Aires. He creates mainly realist figurative works involving a play with the idea of representation, often by subverting the subject or adding a narrative layer in the composition. All his works are painted directly from life and are therefore usually simple calm compositions. They draw the viewer in, inviting serene projection into the paint layer They present a concrete subject but always leave a void to be filled by the viewer. All paintings on canvas or linen use a traditional Flemish Painter's recipe for preparing the support and are mounted on braced panels. This ensures great stability and longevity to the works.
