In the exhibition of gallery 'Lokaal 54' in Terneuzen, the Netherlands
The Painting 'Mathilde' in the back, 'Persian lady' in front, in my studio.
This painting is made in honor of Mathilde Willink. A Dutch woman and the wife and muse of the painter Carel Willink.
It will be shown in an exhibition on the date that she would have been 80 years (7-7-2018), in her birth town Terneuzen in the Netherlands.

My painting 'Mathilde' is the fourth canvas in the series 'Demoiselles Mondiale'.
The series shows strong women, painted on large, loose canvases, inspired by my travels, encounters, art that touches me and my own feminine strength.

Mathilde Willink, the muse of the famous Dutch painter Carel Willink and the one who wore the dresses of the Dutch-Chinese designer Fong Leng with great flair, is portrayed as the sparkling, eccentric, adventurous woman she was.
I have dressed her in an own conceived, swirling dress, complemented by the lace cap and the red coral necklace with golden knot from the costume that was traditionally worn in Terneuzen.

I placed her in an abstract landscape from her birthground, with the river Schelde in the background. Above the slightly undulating water are the Dutch skies with their eternal play of clouds, sun and rainstorms; alternations in the weather that reflect the life of Mathilde.
Painting this canvas felt like an adventure, and I needed some guts, especially for the smashing swipe over her dress. And that's the way it should be, the person Mathilde, whom I now know a bit as a crazy, but sympathetic and smart woman, has to be felt in my canvas.

In a short docu I show you my latest series of paintings in my studio. In Dutch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPrjF3D0Irs&t=61s Living in a not-too-big city in the south of the Netherlands, the Dutch visual artist Sylvia Thijssen walks every day to her studio. It is a four kilometers walk wherein she crosses two small rivers. It is an excellent distance to free her mind of domestic affairs for to let the muse in. It is in this sunny, personal space that she paints her colorful canvasses, in active gestures big and small, like dancing, always trying to hear the colors sing together, searching for an energy wherein is also the peace of a moment in eternity, taking time as if the paint forms a structure that grew and matured. Thijssen is not thinking of her work as making paintings, no, these are adventures. Exciting adventures for her as a painter to make new experiences for the one who is looking at them. These adventurous paintings are meant to wander the mind and to wonder the eye. See also her website: http://www.sylviathijssen.nl
