About The Artwork

I was born and raised in Korea. I majored in sculpture and dancheong. Dancheong refers to a pattern painted on traditional Korean architecture. Also, I am a cultural property repair technician. Traditional Korean architecture is made of wood. Dancheong was painted on buildings from at least the fourth century to prevent corrosion of wood. Dancheong has a variety of styles, from simple monochromatic paint to complex patterns. The Dancheong pattern has permeated the lives of Koreans for a long time and forms the basis of Korean culture. As a cultural property repair skill and artist, I felt the need for Dancheong to be expressed as a painting work, not just as an architectural decoration. This painting is made of Dancheong pigment used in actual Dancheong construction. Unlike ordinary pigments, Dancheong pigments are highly durable, weather-resistant, heat-resistant, alkali-resistant, acid-resistant, and light-resistant, so they are preserved for a long time

Eeon Kang(b.1989) is born and raised in south Korea. She mainly deals with Korean social issues and history in her work. She is also deeply interested in reinterpreting Korean traditional art in a modern way. This is because Korean traditional culture and traditional art were largely damaged by Japan's colonial rule in the early 20th century and the Korean War in the mid-20th century. Since then, Korea's traditional culture and arts have been cut off a lot as it focuses on the economic revival of the country. She learned Dancheong, a traditional Korean architectural decorative art, to find Korea's cultural identity. She is currently a cultural heritage repair technician in Korea and also a national intangible cultural heritage no.118 Buddhism painting artisan bearer. She fell into the world of art at the age of five when she was battling severe childhood asthma. She once left Seoul to treat asthma and spent time in the countryside with clear air. While living in the countryside, she became interested in nature, Korean traditional architecture, and traditional culture. When she went to school, she stayed in Seoul again. Living in a highly educational area called Daechi-dong, she became interested in the structural problems and absurdities of Korean society. She has experience as a leader of the feminist artist group Buraza Collective. And she has been living as a vegetarian since 2016 to protect the environment. Recently, she has stopped drinking and smoking and is enjoying meditation, yoga, travel and reading.
