About The Artwork

I painted this work after coming back from a trip to China, where I was lucky enough to be able to examine a lot of Chinese contemporary art in venues like Beijing's Art Zone 798. I love both traditional and modern Chinese painting, and am a particular fan of abstract painters such as Chu Teh Chun and Liu Kuo Sung, both of whom influenced this work. This was my attempt to emulate Chinese abstract ink painting - although I mainly used black acrylic paint, black spray acrylics and white gesso to create the composition. Thick white gesso sinks into wet black paint, due to its higher density, creating lovely swirling and marbelling-style effects where the two kinds of paint meet. Chinese artists going all the way back to the literati period often paint mountains from above as if they were looking down on them, and I was interested when viewers who saw this painting in an exhibition in Turkey often said that it reminded them of looking down on a landscape from a plane. However, the picture may create a completely different set of images in your mind, and that's the beaty of abstract painting.

I am an artist and writer with paintings in private and corporate collections in Turkey, the UK, the United States, Canada and Australia. I live in Adana, Turkey. I am a member of both local and national jury-selected artists' associations and often participate in Turkish-government sponsored exhibitions in other countries. I paint in both figurative and abstract styles, but most recently my interest has been in capturing the kind of details in nature that you would usually pass by without a second glance: things like weathered rocks, broken branches and dying leaves. The idea behind this 'Vanitas' series is perhaps that the value and beauty of the ordinary things in nature lies in their impermanence. Many of my works are built up of multiple layers over a long period of time − using a variety of techniques and tools. Layers of paint are poured, glazed, scratched, and rubbed away until the desired effect is achieved. Each exhibition I take part in brings me into contact with many artists and art lovers, whose feedback and reactions to my work I find invaluable. I continue to develop new techniques and explore new approaches in order to develop my personal response to the world around me.
