Work by Mordecehy Moti Cohen a I, Mordechay (Moti) Cohen, am an Israeli artist based in Tel Aviv. I have been painting for more than three decades. As an expressionist artist, I work spontaneously with almost no preliminary sketches or external stimulations. My paintings are a window to my subconscious. Black and white are key components in my toolkit. They represent a decomposition of complex emotions and a focus on their basic elements. I prefer to use raw black and white materials such as industrial ink, tar and acrylic. These allow me to create a spectrum of tones and emotions between the black and white. When using other colors, I intentionally do not match them, as I find color dissonance to be more expressive and thought-provoking. My works were presented in numerus exhibitions; solo exhibitions, and group exhibitions. Most notable were my exhibitions in the first Israeli Biennale in Haifa (1978); the Israel Museum, Jerusalem (2001, group exhibition: “Local Pictures”); Alter & Gil Gallery, Los Angeles (2004, solo exhibition); Gallery 88 – Strömstad, Sweden (2010, solo exhibition). I also presented and sold numerus paintings in key art fairs in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Melbourne. Several of my works are owned by known collectors in the US, and three of my works were donated to the Amarillo Museum of Art in Texas. In 2018 I opened my own studio in Tel Aviv where I paint and exhibit today. Looking at my work people often ask for an interpretation, yet I rarely have an adequate explanation for a specific painting. I often feel like an outside observer trying to deconstruct a painting that emerged from my subconscious mind.
