About The Artwork

I was inspired by a natural phenomenon that I first encountered when I was in the Lofoten Islands. I wanted to capture on this triptych all the colors and the feeling of what I saw. The diameter of the paintings is 50 cm, 40 cm and 30 cm. Together they will be 120 cm long if they are hung without a distance between them. "The midnight sun is a natural phenomenon that occurs during the summer in places south of the Antarctic Circle and north of the Arctic Circle – including Northern Norway. The earth is rotating at a tilted axis relative to the sun, and during the summer months, the North Pole is angled towards our star. That’s why, for several weeks, the sun never sets above the Arctic Circle." (c) https://www.visitnorway.com/things-to-do/nature-attractions/midnight-sun/

Mary Lys has combined school and art for several years and was presented her first painting in an exhibition for young artists already when she was eight years old. In recent years, she has studied architecture college and has a bachelor's degree in environmental design. Mary finds inspiration when she travels and is interested in studying different styles in art and architecture. Her paintings are an attempt to understand, describe, illustrate and reflect on life. The essential thing in art is that it has an unconditional language that everyone can understand. Mary's abstract paintings are inspired by nature and a combination of colors with an emphasis on spontaneous and subconscious energy. Artistic process is as important to her as the finished result. This process in her work is dynamic and based on relationships that bind art elements to each other. Ideas can come in the speed of light and can be form or combination of colors. The paintings are Mary's existential struggle with the materials. She believes that paintings can affect surroundings. In each picture, she intends to bring color and shape into harmony. Her art maintains the instant impression of color and the experience of nature on canvas.
