About The Artwork

Inspired by the work of Jan van Eyck and the English Netherlandish painters of the Elizabethan period in England, Misty is painted surreally as a harlequin cat-jester, using largely the pigments that were available at the time. Every hair is painted individually, using very fine Kolinsky sable brushes with widths from 3/0 to 10/0 creating a level of detail that anybody that sees it close-up will find wonderful. The painting's support is solid 9mm thick quarter-sawn oak that has been prepared using traditional methods and it is mounted in a silled frame that is hand-carved - you can't get silled frames unless you make them yourself. The polychromy/Trome l'Oeil on the frame represents a hard, dark stone that is heavily fractured with inclusions of gold-carrying quartz - the actual gold used in its creation being 24 carat gold leaf. The level of detail in the painting goes right down to the individual hairs painted, painstakingly, over a period of several weeks. For the reason that the polychromy on the frame extends to the outside of the frame, creating the impression that it is indeed carved from stone, the painting and its frame is mounted in a tray frame that protects it and shows it off and as such, is ready to hang.

I was born in Derby (England) in the 1960's and in my 20's I worked professionally for a number of years as the City of Derby's Pavement Artist and was even on the Thames Television (UK) show 'What's My Line' as a pavement artist and beat the panel. Recently, I designed a number of indic fonts that have been used in films, books, papers, posters, magazines and so on and of the top five Punjabi fonts used on the Internet, I have the top three places with 'GHP Full', 'Gurvetica' and 'Raaj'. I now work in oils on canvas and wooden panel, including projects that use only the materials that were available at the beginning of the 15th century (you can see original 15th century works in the National Gallery so we know that this technology represents an investment that will outlive many generations to come). My styles cover Anthropomorphic and non-Representational Abstract, through surrealism to that of the works of the 15th and 16th Century Dutch and Elizabethan artists.
