About The Artwork

I was inspired by thinking about the suffering of children during the virus period. The image has a sense of sadness and melancholy, it asks the question: is this what childhood should be? The painting is quite thin and was produced quickly it has a sense of struggle but also there's some hope in the bright yellow of the raincoat and boots.

James Lang (b.1987, London) currently lives and works in London having recently returned from Beijing after almost 5 years. He graduated from Liverpool School of Art in 2011 and Camberwell College of Art in 2013 with an MA in Illustration. Living in China was a transformative experience. The distance made him feel closer to the culture he left behind. This led to a series of works inspired by British history and culture. His paintings are inspired by medieval art, literature and a fondness for childhood cartoons and vintage colouring book images. The paintings are often thickly layered, ranging from brightly coloured pop art to blurry monochrome images, Varying in sentiment between innocence and satire.
