These images have their origin from the project YOU ARE NOT A SALMON-Kaffeesatz, developed during the artist residency in 2012 at Villa Strauli (Winterthur - CH), where he produced 100 ingots of coffee grounds. The goal was to be able to have an artifact enough strong to handle and at the same time use as a thickener only organic glue (flour glue). Unfortunately due to moisture just 1 later, the ingot began to produce mold. A mold characterized by beautiful colors: green, white, yellow, orange, pink. It seemed there was no way to solve the problem. Fortunately, after much work and all kind of attempts I managed to find the right solution, producing 100 ingots of coffee sediment. Throughout the long process and the countless failures have provided a really interesting chance: the mold was at the beginning a fierce enemy and then became a good ally getting new starting points for the project. Why not use photos of moldy ingots to make paintings? These images seem to be an abstract painting but actually have a component figurative and structuralist. Landscapes of the mind and architectural ribs. All details on http://youarenotasalmon-project.blogspot.it/

Massimo Pianese (Naples 1979) graduated in Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts of Naples. Since 1999 he has been present to numerous group shows in Italy and abroad. He usually works using video, photography, installation, painting and cross media. Since 2003 he’s been working as assistant of the artist Gian Marco Montesano. ARTIST STATEMENT: A text written by Carla Subrizi for the catalogue “Interplay-Premio Termoli 2009” i “... The videos of Massimo Pianese always show us a real amended, through the manipulation of the images or with the choice of specific points of view, very close or very far away from the subject. Pianese works in the margins of the real. He focuses his videos on current issues: the environment and its crisis, the relationship between the tradition and the extinction of ecosystems, stories of special characters or of restricted crowds of people, whose actions are registered slowly. It seems that nothing happens in these video: however imperceptibly things are transformed. The time of video is almost a real time following scenes apparently fixed. This is the most interesting aspect of his research: the almost nothing, the detail, a scene in which you can't understand what is happening because observed from far away; the time almost property that scans the movements. The result obtained is not just alienation, that the observer feels, but almost a surprise when he realizes that in a lenght of time everything is changed. Parts of reality have emerged slowly: they were invisible, no one noticed them, but they were there and only with techniques like those used by the artist the pieces come in surface and tell us a story which overwhelm even that we had already known.”.
