About The Artwork
This painting is part of my large series called "Family Album". This is referencing a photograph of my mother in the early 90's, when I was just a child. I have no real memory of this moment, where my mom has a balloon in her nightgown. The mobile-home we lived in is the only part I can remember. I wanted to look back on these photos and try to reinterpret the memories or happenings that have been documented. I wanted the painting to be dreamlike in colour, with the use of fluorescence. Expressionist in my application of the paint help communicate my lack of actual memories when I see these images.

Kyle Killam is a contemporary Canadian artist working in Toronto. Aesthetically, part of his work is fully abstract, and part is mixed with a child-like view of a realistic world, where even the most grotesque appeals with its appearance. In terms of subject matter, the works allow transient guilty and intrusive thoughts a chance to exist for longer than a fleeting moment by committing them to canvas, be it in the form of demonic creatures or mere lines and shapes. These thoughts would usually be ignored by our mind for fear of their depravity, and thus never exist long enough for us to examine in depth, but Kyle's commemoration allows just that.
