Mother and child Painting

The inspiration for this painting is an old photo of my mother and sister. The black and white photo was taken in 1968 with limited photography technology available at that time. The photo is blurry but conveys the immense love my mother had for her firstborn child. She also appeared to be very blessed and proud of becoming a mother to a beautiful little healthy girl whose birth was complicated. I have done two versions of this painting, one in chalk on paper and this one acrylic/oil on canvas. When I showed my painting to my husband, he said 'oh you painted Madonna and Child', and I said ' this is my mother and sister'. I hadn't really made that connection, despite having seen Madonna and Child at various museums in Europe. So, this is my version of Madonna and child, my mother and sister. The style of painting is expressionist, I have tried to capture the love, pride, and blessing my mother's blurry picture conveyed and which I have been blessed to experience. I wish my mother was here in person to see it, but I know that she is watching from the heavens above.
