In this art work, I have tried to bring together shadows of images, from rural and small town, India. These form part of my life-scape and are an intrinsic part of my memory. In the work, these shadow images of day to day life activities from common people are displayed within boxes, mimicking priceless objects displayed in a museum.

As an artist I am affected by the socio-political happenings of the day, yet the whole process is internalized and indirect. I look towards ready images as the data base of personal experience as well as the raw material of expression. Therefore in appropriating anonymous images from the media there is liberation from direct personal experience of reality, I have become the transcriber who reconstitutes images in the objective distancing of privacy. I respond to different imagery, connecting one to the other and taking them out of context and rearranging them. I find that individual images in their own space carry specific meanings; these reorganized alongside other images while still retaining their original independence, create an edgy co-existence of conflicting values, completely different from those of the archetype. The resulting new sensation or meaning starts operating on multiple levels, allowing a constant visual re-reading of the arranged images, inviting and initiating a variety of interpretations tolerant of multiplicity. Thus I feel the "inventiveness" in my work, lies just as much in the selection and juxtaposing of the images, as in its technical manipulations.
