About The Artwork

"In art, all who have done something other than their predecessors have merited the epithet of revolutionary; and it is they alone who are masters.” - Paul Gauguin This is my tribute to Paul Gauguin, a master of art. I positioned his Tahitian Women, 1891 close to the center in the lower part of the canvas. Being so near, filling so much of the area, they are both on the surface and in depth, both flat and modeled. Gauguin's answer to Post-Impressionism's problem was Symbolism, so unique that he sought escape from civilization in less industrialized, so-called primitive cultures rather than in the imaginary dream world of his predecessors. To echo Gauguin's fondness for elemental beauty, I portrayed his women as living simply in the tropics. Coconut trees abound; providing shelter and food to their habitat. For their cleaning needs, a river runs nearby. While I continue to conceptualize Gauguin's Tahiti paintings, I can feel the peace and harmony between the female figures and the surrounding nature, the strong enthusiasm and passion for life, and the simplicity of sexuality and human nature. These feelings merge together and come out as a romantic visual enjoyment.

As a painter, I am inspired by the diverse cultures and people on our planet. I also like to capture the beauty in the mundane objects and places. By exploring my personal and spiritual connection with nature through my interpretation of God's creation, I strive to create images that transport the viewers to a different state of mind. I want them to experience something new that they have not noticed in the past. Utilizing both my illustrative instinct that I acquired through years of experience in Graphic Design and my modern stylistic technique, I am able to explore the art of painting to achieve a sense of self-fulfillment. My style and my love of color give me a sense of freedom and joy in creating, which, in turn achieve a sense of motion and emotion in my work. Armed with the design elements of line, shape, color, contrast. value, balance and texture, I particularly like to experiment with different materials like fine sand, burlap, sinamay fabric (woven in the Philippines), rice grains and paper to accomplish a richness in texture or to evoke depth. My repertoire of tools include, but not limited to brush, palette knife, toothbrush, sponge, opaque and thinning mediums, wet on wet and glazing. Different mediums allow me to express different ideas in a unique and personal way. Each and every single piece contains a fragment of myself, created in an effort to unearth myself or sometimes even heal myself. I strive to make my paintings speak out their innermost depth, conveying the message of healing energy and hope.
