Mycenae VII Painting

Miguel Sopena grew up in València, Spain, but is now based in South London. Miguel became an artist coming from a completely different background in Physics, and combined finishing his PhD with a part-time Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at Brighton City College, followed by a 2-year portraiture diploma at the Heatherley School of Fine Art in London. Even though his training was figurative, Miguel's practice is now mostly abstract, with a focus on the materiality of the media he works with, and inspired by sources as diverse as early life memories, states of mind, architecture, landscape, and his love of art history. Miguel's Mycenae series was born during the Covid pandemic, and was partly a search for bigger scales and a more expansive and gestural painting language, but also for a sense of freedom and optimism that reality did not allow at the time. You can see the full series to date on Miguel's website, . The paintings in the Mycenae series are created on unstretched (loose) canvas. These works would ship safely rolled up in a shipping tube and can be displayed as they are, hanging from a 210 cm horizontal pole with the help of fabric clips or similar (all these provided with the piece). Alternatively, these pieces can also be stretched on a 200x150 cm wooden stretcher for display. The current (2023) cost of professional stretching for this canvas size in London (UK) is around £400 ($500). Miguel would be able to arrange the stretching service in coordination with Saatchi Art, if desired. The full size of these pieces is 200x150 cm (painted surface) on a 240x180 cm canvas background (painted surface plus border).
