A gallery artist is exposed, literally on display, sharing the world through the filter of their art. Yet, contemporary abstract artists do more than that, they confront the mystery of existence and ask the viewer to look beyond the canvas, to the layered meaning within the textures of light and shadow. Mystery compels the viewer to make a false assumption, to place meaning to form and wonder at the abstract figure who seems to appear in a corporeal manifestation of smoke and ash, flame and shade. The textured bone white background only adds to the eldritch quality of the form and lends a kind of uncertainty to the relationship between art and mind. Smoldering orange waves crash against smoky black shores as white and grey intertwine to make Lovecraftian figures loom out the abstract dreamscape. It is an image born out of the process of creation, a mystery the artist must work through to resolve. “The process of pouring, drying, more pouring and sponging, and allowing the paint to flow with a mind of its own means learning to let go, trust, and let the magic happen.” That balance between trust and ambiguity, between heart and mind is what plays out intriguingly across the canvas.
