‘NANNY VERA'S MARILYN’ Painting

‘Nanny Vera’s Marilyn’ evolved a few months before my wife’s birthday. She has always been a massive Marilyn Monroe fan... In the early spring of 2016, after a particularly cold, wet, damp winter, l took on the arduous task of clearing out the summer house. It had become a dumping ground for abandoned, misplaced items. Among them was Nanny Vera’s mirrored-back sideboard; it was looking slightly worse for wear. Nanny Vera had given it to my wife a few years previously when she moved house and had no room for it. The sideboard had been in the family for many years, carrying great sentimental value for her and she was reluctant to part with it. Unfortunately the damp and cold had gotten to it, rendering it beyond repair; up-cycling was the only option. I salvaged what I could, getting rid of any damaged and rotten wood, separating the beautiful carved panels, posts, mouldings and finials. Unfortunately, the backing to the framed mirror part was badly damaged... That’s when I had the idea to use the frame to create a piece of artwork for my wife’s birthday... there was only one choice!
