About The Artwork
This is one of a series of back portraits of women having done their hair casually up, turning away from the gaze of the onlooker, being by themselves, in a calm space represented by the raw linen fabric surrounding them. They are painted on modelling paste spread as a primer within the outline of the depicted person, a smooth surface that has a slightly 3 D feel as it is set against the linen. The women portrayed wear thick woolen sweaters, the pattern and structure of the knit also painted in much detail, to create an illusion of the fuzzy wool
