Nebulous Sleep – A self portrait Painting

Painted in 2016, this is part of my ‘Sleepers’ series. In this series I am exploring various aspects of sleep, it’s a fascination I’ve had since I was a young boy, watching my mother sleep and seeing how her ‘spirit’ seemed to float around her eyes. Although the vast majority of the works in this series are sleeping acrobats and dancers, I feel that exploring my personal relationship to sleep is very important. The painting includes some of the nebulae in the Cygnus constellation, which was directly above me at birth. Each night before sleep, I program myself to try to reinstate the original ‘pattern’ which is Billy. It is a healing process and aimed at dumping some of the muck that we accumulate throughout our lives.
