Mixed media painting on paper
14.8 x 21cm
Frame size 29.7 x 42cm

For the composition of this piece I have taken loose inspiration from figurative expressionist Francis Bacon; framing the lonely animal in a boldly coloured room which is viewed from his uniquely signature perspective.

The giraffe has descended into its fragile, vulnerable position to drink – a stark contrast to how they are often depicted in their statuesque majesty. The animal's portrayed weakness as it drinks from a viscous lake of oil and the ‘portrait’ of a plastic chair hanging proudly on the wall are a comment on the exploitative use of crude oil and its detrimental effect on both our planet and the wildlife with whom we share it.
