About The Artwork

“Neptune’s Maid” has been inspired by the series “The Handmaid’s Tale” and especially the main character June. She is a strong woman, trapped in a harsh patriarchal and dystopian future scenario. The bonnet she (and other women) are wearing left such and impression that the woman in my painting also wears one. The bonnet (as in the series) represents suppression: a woman should be chaste, her hair should be covered, even her face, she must not be sexual in any way. Till today, these inflicted requirements are still valid and realized in order to control women. My maid stands for all these women. As in the series, June stands for many. However, my female figure is looking up, showing her face and even her fringe is looking out. I painted this artwork to look like a political poster for empowerment and the longing for freedom. “Neptune’s Maid” is meant universal and applicable to all that should rise from suppression.

Lena Snow is a fine artist based in Germany who currently has her studio in a small town on the edge of the Black Forest (near Baden-Baden) where she is working on her latest artworks while keeping in touch with nature. Lena is specialized in female portraiture and sensual art with her main medium being paper. She earned a Master's degree at the University of Mannheim and Karlsruhe. "I explore various aspects of femininity and female identity in my paintings. My inspiration are personal stories of women I encountered, but also female characters in mythology, film, and literature. They are a new, powerful, and emancipated approach of one’s identity and sexuality, and at the same time they stand for empowerment for all women. For a long time only men have painted women, neglecting their personal stories of ambivalence, trauma and multifaceted nature, but it is time that women change the narrative and capture their unique stories by contributing to a new, empowered expression of elevated femininity." Lena has exhibited internationally, and has been published in several art and lifestyle magazines around the world. The award-winning artist is also editor of the international art magazine Goddessarts Magazine.
