About The Artwork

This piece is currently on loan for a show, but still available for purchase. Victims of human trafficking often feel shame from what they were forced to do by other people. It's up to us to come along beside them and lift them up and help them love themselves again. When you buy this painting, 50% of the cost (minus fees) will be donated to Restore One's Anchor House project. This is the first long-term recovery safe home in the US for adolescent boys who are victims of human trafficking. This piece symbolizes bringing victims out of the darkness of shame (the dark figure) and back into the light (the bright background). The background was created with Montana spray paints, acrylics, and water colors applied with various techniques. The girl is spray painted in the foreground using detailed, hand-cut stencils. I wanted the background to show through the figure in places, so I created a process using textured screens to vary the translucency of the grays. These grays are actually all the same color, but thanks to the screen process, they appear as different shades.

Artist-in-residence at The Art Lab in Greenville, NC. I started creating stencils almost 30 years ago. Back then airbrush art was everywhere, but I couldn’t afford a fancy airbrush that let me control the width of the paint. Handcrafting stencils not only allowed me to create intricate artwork but the artwork looked different from everything else. I still use much of what I learned decades ago in my art today. One day, as I was posting a photo of a new hand-cut stencil on Instagram, it hit me that the stencil is a work of art itself. Now you’ll see many of my pieces made from layers of hand-cut paper so the “stencil” becomes the art.
