About The Artwork
This work is inspired by my love of color, patterns, paintings on scrolls in long, vertical format that include painterly elements and calligraphy, my studies into Chinese and Japanese brushstroke characters, as well as the patterns created by ancient Sumerian in clay tablets. I hope viewers will feel a sense of a detailed story being told in a language that they can't decipher logically, so they will need to use their imagination as they look at it over time to decide on what the story is. It is part of my desire to encourage participatory art. I'm working on a series of larger scale water colors. This one has a watercolor background with sumi ink glyphs patterning the surface. I used a wide brush for the watercolor that moves in variations from deep color to light moving from top to bottom. I used a medium size calligraphy brush for the glyphs.

I work in wood, resin, pewter, watercolor, sumi ink and other materials to create art that tells stories based on the interplay of light and shadows on organic shapes and spaces as we move through time. I believe stories and narratives are a critical part of what defines humanity, and that throughout human history until the wide dissemination of electric light, stories (oral and visual) were told in the context of sunlight, firelight and candlelight, each of which creates an environment rich in shadows and movement for both the storyteller and the listener. I aim to capture elements of that narrative richness in my art.
