This work reflects my investigation of nature and my experiences within it. I like to explore the subtle changes of nature through a series of oil paintings and sketches all done on location. Larger works are studio paintings that take on a life of their own after other smaller studies. The natural landscape as a subject has been at the forefront of my art for many years. The lengthy expanse of the seacoast of New England offers endless journeys for an artist. Growing up with the ocean out the front door and salt marshes out the back, my love of these areas has been with me ever since I can remember. I choose these places because I hold a deep appreciation for what they offer. To observe the ever changing moods of an ocean scene, and to look out over wind groomed marsh grasses and winding channels of water is meditative. These places have a calming simplicity, but also within them there is a complexity that is elusive. I often return to the same area at different times of day and different times of season. As I observe, these complex relationships slowly reveal themselves-but offer only a glimpse as they dance, shift, and blend. The locations I choose are very much a part of my life, and for me they are always a source of inspiration and reflection; the timeless quality of these locations are a natural choice for me to be. Through my work, I am interpreting and translating these experiences onto canvas. My goals as an artist is to communicate clearly. I want to capture and share these feelings and experiences with my audience and draw them in deeper into an experience . They create for themselves a dialog with the image and have a lasting personal presence with it. The quote below, in part, describes my thoughts and my process of what I wish to capture in my subject. If I can succeed in this I feel it is a great accomplishment. “Greater familiarity with marshes on the part of more people could give man a truer and more wholesome view of himself in relation to Nature. In marshes, Life’s undercurrents and unknowns and evolutionary changes are exemplified with a high degree of independence and timelessness. They have their own life-rich genuineness and reflect forces that are much older, much more permanent, and much mightier than man.”
