About The Artwork

Although bogs have always been thought to be dangerous for people – the stories about endless bog pools that drown people and evil witches who would tempt the credulous into the bog using small lights – still one is often looking for help and protection from the bog. Man used to pick moss and bog plants using those to cure their illnesses, learned how to use bog ore to get the well-needed iron and picked berries for food. Even nowadays one is looking for help from bogs but in a different way. Subconsciously he feels strongly drawn towards a bog- almost like hoping the mysterious bog would balance humans overwhelming technical everyday world. That silence would create a safe shelter in his soul to recover from life punches. Because how else could be explained the way he comes here with a big noisy companionship, rushes through the bog and quickly disappears back to his urban everyday life. The superficialness he leaves behind will settle into the layers of bog with time - one millimeter per year. People have forgotten how to communicate with wild nature. The bog has its own laws and habits. If you can re-adjust your civilization centred mind then you may feel the peculiar and unkown smells, you may see the blooming cloudberry and the unique colours play in bog. You enjoy the silence and adjust to bogs habits. But for that you need to set your mind free, take time. Time - the most underrated asset there is! When I was a kid and my mother took me to pick cloudberries, we always had to bring an old lady who was the only one to know the secret way through the bog. And to find our way back she tied ribbons here and there on trees. On my way back, with a basket full of berries I rushed, took a wrong step and the bog almost swallowed me up to my waist. But it soon let me go, maybe for me to learn not to rush. The bog is bulging higher from the surroundings like an upside down bowl. The slope is sometimes so steep that going to the bog can feel like climbing a hill ang coming out like a walk downhill. There is a bottom before the slope which is followed by a plateau. The bog gets all its water from rainfall. Smaller bog waters are called “älves” and bigger ones “laugas”. The hags can be up to three meters deep without a hard bottom as there is peat. Peat is considered to be a renewable natural asset in Estonia. Peat consists of plant remnants that have decomposed in a moist yet low oxygen environment. In average bog moss grows thicker one centimeter per year. At the same time in bottom layers peat grows one millimeter. Which means it takes a thousand years to build a layer of peat that is one meter thick. * EL 2011/06-07

Knowledge, that I want to paint, that I have to paint, has been sitting inside me for many years like an unborn butterfly. And has been waiting for its time. It is not “What to paint” but “Why to paint” that is truly important. And if my art matters to someone else, then it brings joy to both sides and the world is a better place for that moment. Mostly I paint with oil and acrylic paint on canvas, some artworks have been made on wood that is decades old. In that case wood becomes a co-author because not always does paint behave on wood in the same way or how I would want it to. The result is definitely surprising and interesting. Recently I have been testing a new technique by combining photos I have taken to acrylic or oil painting. Art is like visual poetry. But poetry does not only tell about pretty things. That is why I get inspired by things that upset me or even make me angry or makes me stop and think for a moment, that gives me wings. Maybe art should be seen with your soul rather than the eyes.
