About The Artwork

This majestic oak tree is one of many ancient trees in the Deer Park at Berkeley in Gloucestershire. It forms part of the estate belonging to the famous castle, still home to the Berkeley family, the oldest building in England to be inhabited by the same family who built it back in the 11th century and site of the murder of King Edward II in 1327. The tree stands on a rise overlooking the River Severn and the Forest of Dean beyond. The whole view speaks of history and the deer park and its trees communicate a powerful sense of time past. The tree trunk is hollow at its base and one of the branches has fallen away but it is still healthy and vigorous. As a painter there was a delicious challenge here, both to capture the detail of the wonderful gnarled bark and also to portray in paint the immense space from the branch reaching towards the viewer in the top left corner back along the branches and out into the landscape and to the river and hills beyond. If there was ever a symbol of the strength and endurance of English history it has to be the Oak Tree.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I am a countryman, a craftsman, a communicator. I consider myself fortunate to be able to sit in front of a subject and record it in paint, it has taken a lifetime to put together the skills in order to do so but I still find the act of painting thrilling. Subjects as diverse as landscape, still-life and interiors are all conveyed through a mastery of observed colour and a lifelong fascination with the representation of space and light. I am the third generation of my family to live in this beautiful part of the south Cotswolds in rural England but I have also been lucky enough to travel extensively in Europe and to Saudi Arabia and the Caribbean to paint. I paint almost exclusively in oils.
