About The Artwork

The first of the Heemetkunscht Series, Ode to Bethlehem combines a stained glass mosaic pattern with a reflection on the artist's home town of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania written in the Pennsylvania Dutch language (Pennsylvania German) weaving throughout. The central motif shows a bank barn typical of the PA Dutch country, a style of barn which outside of Pennsylvania can only be found in areas of Switzerland from where some of the PA Dutch come. The Hex Signs adorning the barn are an example of the importance of intricate decoration and artistic display to a heavily agricultural culture. Text Within the Painting: Im Lechaa Daal gebt's en helles Licht wu Bethlehem heest; Meinre Hemmetschtadt.
Datt waar ich gbore,
datt watt mei Hatz am Ende leie.
Liewer Gott im Himmel drin, loss uns Deitsche was mir sinn.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I am a self-taught oil painter who has developed over a decade or so a style which incorporates the Pennsylvania German language, traditional motifs such as Hex Signs and Fraktur, and mosaic or stained glass-like elements which together create what I call "Heemetkunscht", or Art of my Home. Each painting has a message to the viewer written out in the PA German dialect, which is most often arranged in a way that the words blend into the composition and may not even be noticed by the viewer. I want to create decorative, colorful and peaceful paintings which carry a deep meaning on a personal level for some, and for others they can be viewed, as the PA Germans would say, 'Chust for Nice.
