While I was mailing postcards of the painting 'I live by the River!!!' my shipper Omar asked, Is that a new painting? I said, Yes, what do you see? He examined closely and asked, Is it chairs? I said, It's not intentionally any one thing, in fact, at best I hope it wriggles away from any single interpretation. Since then I've thought about how things made to accomodate people's bodies stand in for them like understudies; chairs, clothes, beds, buildings, coattrees, coffins etc all act figuratively. Whether it's descriptions of paintings or paintings themselves a sealed up explanation gives the viewer more of a lid than a handle on the piece. One of my favorite photographers Robert Doisneau put it best, "To suggest is to create, to define is to destroy"
