On the Palatine Hill, Rome, Italy Painting

The ruins and buildings on the Palatine Hill in Rome are among the oldest in Europe. The tall house in the center of this picture is part of the Emperor Augustus's mother's house. This house has seen Rome sacked and Rome fallen, barbarians, and the Holy Roman Emperor invading, plague and malaria, and still it survives. The weight of antiquity, the palpable presence of history in Rome is everywhere. Susan and I have spent months living in Rome and writing a guidebook to the city. We love wandering around the neighborhoods. I prefer loosely painted landscapes that show the effect of light and weather. I hope that you feel the unique combination of complexity, history, and the vibrantly alive present when you see my Roman paintings. There is no where else like it and it's one of the best places to be.
