Number ONE people need to be perfect! They are idealists, motivated and driven by longing for a true, just and moral world. Number One can mean Winning, Standing alone and The Best. Lucy Van Pelt, Charlie Brown's antagonist in 'Peanuts' is the caricature of the unredeemed ONE. NBA star Oscar Robertson wore the No. 1. I have come to this number imagery after many years of creating Art and hope to inspire the viewer to think and wonder. This recent series incorporates the individual numeral from zero to nine as the basis of the entire artwork. Positive and negative space is defined to create a contemporary, expressive color field painting. I play with the paint and the painting process in these defined spaces to create subtle but intriguing surfaces of color and texture that reveal more and more on each viewing.

I PAINT NUMBERS!... Kearns' current series of work focuses on the Diamond as a symbol of the Soul. He tends to explore smaller detailed abstract areas of color and shape within a larger picture of beauty, form and reality. When he isn’t painting the individual numeral from Zero to Nine as finished art works in their own right, Kearns' incorporates sequential numbering into his other series of art works. Relatively obvious in the Celebrity Portrait Series and his first two hundred or so paintings and constructions, it is much more subtle, but still integrated into this latest series of dramatic Diamond works. This numbering becomes an interesting marker in tracking his evolution as an artist. Cliff Kearns incorporates 'Numbers' as a primary concept and element in his Art Practice. Numbers measure just about everything! They can be simple in form yet complex in meaning. Life can become a numbers game. Kearns comes to this mid career of visual self expression after graduating from the Special Art Program at H.B. Beal in London ON Canada and a formidable career in the Art departments. of London Life Insurance Co., 3M Co., The London Free Press and as Art Director of CFPL-TV. He then began a solo career working as a freelance illustrator and commissioned artist. Thirty five years saw Cliff create and produce an eclectic array of creative design and illustrative work for high profile publishers and corporations such as General Motors of Canada, Canadian General Electric, Proctor & Gamble, TD Canada Trust, The university of Western Ontario and 3M Co. Notable commissions included the only official portrait of Terry Fox for the Marathon of Hope. Poster Art for the Commonwealth Games and a major outdoor clay mural sculpture for the City of Chatham Centenary. Cliff founded, built and merged The Ad & Design House into partnership with Surge Communications which he sold in 2004. Throughout this time he taught 3 semesters of painting and illustration at Fanshawe School of Design while pursuing a passionate study of the history of Art. Kearns has exhibited at Art Expo New York, Galleries in Park City Utah, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and North Hollywood CA in United States. Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and London Ontario in Canada. His work is in private, corporate and public collections. Cliff and his wife Mary Margaret live in Vancouver BC Canada...
