About The Artwork

The idea of the painting started from the sad fate of "Ophelia" the famous heroine of William Shakespeare, portrayed in the beautiful artwork by Sir John Everett Millais, but rethinking it in a modern key and representing only a detail that however manages to evoke the whole story, a part for the whole, I choosed to build the painting with different materials such as plaster, gold leaf and dry leaves, articulating a material that is now very raw, now thin and light like butterfly wings, creating a captivating contrast. I limited the too bright colors as in the Everett painting , and I remained in the brown shades of the dry leaves. I hope that those who observe it, can empathize with my work by reconstructing the story in their mind.

Ugo Felici was born in Pesaro in 1954. His classical studies permeate his whole production and represent a fundamental trait of his painting. If they did not give him the opportunity to develop specific artistic techniques and knowledge from the very beginning, all the same, they gave him the possibility of broadening his cultural interests and widening the horizons in his own mind. This all helped him to improve his unusual sensitivity in searching both his inner world and the surrounding reality, what let him develop the ability of perceiving lyricism and essence also in everyday gestures and in the most common things. The year 1999 represents his decisive year of his artistic maturity, when he meets Professor Franco Fiorucci, teacher at the local School of Arts and a greatly appreciated watercolorist. Attending his courses Ugo Felici studies in depth various expressive/painting techniques, from the drawing to the painting in oils and in watercolors, committing his own feelings and emotions now to the stroke, now to the vibrations of the material and now to the transparencies that only water and pigments can give. A special attention has always been dedicated to the study of the figure, what Ugo Felici strengthened through courses of modeling held by the sculptor Loreno Sguanci and Claudio Candelaresi, and with stages of the Free School of Nude of the Academy of Fine Arts of Macerata at the branch of the Artemisia Artistic Association of Falconara Marittima, with teacher Paolo Benvenuti for drawing and, Lanfranco Lanari for etching, which will enrich his artistic knowledge. This is a time of study and thought about pictorial language that will lead him to a new vision of reality, more synthetic and allusive. Recently he perfected modelling technique in the artistic laboratory Verzolini in Pesaro.
