Orange Blossom Special Painting

Orange Blossom Special is part of Paula McHugh’s series of paintings inspired by the titles of American and Celtic fiddle tunes and folk songs. This painting depicts a train moving through twilight sky and orange groves of Florida. The Seaboard Orange Blossom Special began its north-south run in 1925 bringing passengers from the frosty streets of New York City to the sunny beaches of West Palm Beach, Florida and eventually Miami. In 1938 musicians Ervin T. Rouse and Robert Russell “Chubby” Wise witnessed the train speed by the Jacksonville station and composed the now famous fiddle tune that mimics that fine train. Bill Monroe recorded and popularized the tune in 1942.
