This work is inspired by drawings of the disgustingly beautiful and smelly paper factory called Ence between Pontevedra and Marín in Galicia, Spain. Its grey and dark buildings and piles of orange sawdust mixed with the surrounding eucalyptus trees, palms and ferns is a real contrast. Using spray paint for the first time on a canvas gave me new way of mixing sharp stencilled lines with more spontaneous random marks.

The process used when making a work like this is heavily inspired by that of Dutch-American abstract expressionist artist Willem de Kooning. He sometimes used drawings as masks for new marks on the canvas while also working wet in wet, layering paint over charcoal and other marks. I took these techniques and added them to my own arsenal of masking and blending paint on the brush. A painting in this style evolves over time, telling me where it wants to go, rather than me following an established composition.

Tom Glendenning is an artist and muralist based in Spain whose paintings have been exhibited internationally. He describes his artistic expression as being rooted in the contrasts of colour, mark-making, and texture, as well as controlled randomness. Specifically, Glendenning endeavours to create a "sense of place" within each of his compositions, often focusing on the relationship between urban and natural environments.
