About The Artwork
Nothing surpasses a love for cattle in my culture. The importance of a man and his hard work is judged by a number of cattle he has and the number of cattle he paid for his bride. In the past Xhosa and Mfengu people loved their cattle. They used them as transport and as a source of food. This painting shows the pride of my people.

Nombeko Mafenuka started drawing at a very young age. She is originally from the Eastern Cape in a small village of Tsomo, in the former Transkei. She grew up in a very disadvantaged community and they didn’t have any proper drawing material. As a child she used to draw on rocks and on aloe plant leaves. She currently lives and works in Cape Town as an arts educator and an artist since the early 1990's. She has been doing art since she was in high school. She has sold her work around the world.
