Brazil
Welcome to the colorful world of Gisele Ulisse, a Brazilian artist with a unique perception of life in big cities. Simple scenes of everyday life evolve into poetic and playful visual representations for easy contemplation, however, with a great deal of colour and movement. Gisele has moved from the strictly figurative depiction of Brazilian ethnic groups – brought to canvas by her with much inspiration – to an aesthetically impressionist style more in keeping with cosmopolitan surroundings. She is now engages in the urban universe, showing he lyrical perception of sensitiveness and a slow awakening to the study of the human soul. This results in a feeling for and the contemplation of everyday life and reveals a fine observation of everyday occurrences and their opportunities of pictorial representation. In her “Urban” series, the artist seems to draw the viewer into the picture. City life scenes lend colour to her canvases in an unpretentious manner, merging the abstract and the figurative, shapes and colours. Her vibrant palette moves crowds as well as the simplicity of single elements. Everything enters the scene. Figures without identity, going about their everyday routines while being unaware of the artist’s gaze, are transformed by evocative strokes of the paint brush in her works. Bicycles, bars, and street cafes appear in her pictures. Even infernal traffic conditions do not encourage the artist to show chaos, but to describe the activities of all individuals that appear in the scenery. The comings and goings are like picturesque rhythms of a symphony. Gisele Ulisse’s paintings irradiate joy of life, strong, pure colours, dynamic strokes of the brush, and open, friendly faces. It was not by chance that Gisele Ulisse chose the impressionist style of painting for a new way of painting that had liberates itself from rigid forms and contours in favour of living landscapes full of light and people who live the joy of their lives.
