About The Artwork

"Paradise Lost" Acrylic, Wax, Soap & Rabbit-Skin Glue on 2 found Canvases 97 x 70 cm 2019 In "Paradise lost" I decided to paint a free hand perpendicular line every day and chose the color by chance on the upper canvas. Some weeks and many lines later I was walking at Langen Bahnhof, where the day before a "Fridays for Future" demo had passed and the trash and leftovers from this demonstration could be found all around. Here I found a canvas in the bin with slogans like "No plastic" or "We love our earth" just thrown away after demonstrating. I added this canvas to the first one and continued drawing my perpendicular lines till the end. The conceptual idea is very important to me, especially the focus on the process of making and developing paintings over a period of time one by one and pick up, what happens on road.

Arthur Kunz is a trained computer scientist and cosmopolitan. Born in 1978 in the former USSR, he grew up in Bietigheim and later lived in Vienna and Berlin. So his identity is made up of various elements and cultures. The same can be said about his pictures. He describes himself as a bag man who collects literature, screenshots, computer games and his own personal history from the city's refuse bins. All of these elements are juxtaposed in paintings, drawings and books. Filled with strong signs, the works appear at first glance like drawings by a teenager, in which there is also a lot of irony and distance. But under the apparently childish surface there is something hectic and irresponsible, something lustful and erotic. Arthur Kunz paints in a way that only feigns sloppiness, because the pictures are “realistic and carefully executed.” In his composition he moves the attention of the spectator to the edges of the picture thereby challenging the traditional centre of a painting. As a real painter, he deals extensively with questions of color and composition, develops the pictures over a long period of time often in only small steps and likes to create multi-serially. Arthur Kunz lives and works in Langen, Germany.
