About The Artwork
To commemorate Black History Month, Banke created a 7-piece series ‘Our Freedom, Their Voices’ in which through her expression of vibrant colours and carefully chosen words once spoken by some of these great leaders, she highlights and celebrates their works and sacrifices to bring forth modern civilisation and the freedom we have today. Opening this series, is the civil rights is the African American Muslim Minister and human rights activist, Malcolm X. Banke translates his vocal and military driven path in her choice of colours, elements of red to symbolise the physical confrontations and violent paths he took to resolve black grievances. Palettes of browns, greens, blues and yellows signify the hope his uproar brought to many and the successes can be reflected in his choice of words stand boldly stated. Instagram @bankejemiyo
