This painting was of a friend and model and I wanted to convey the self harm one does through addiction in everyday life. At one stage smoking was often considered as cool but has over the years been recognised as extremely harmful but when I spoke to my friend about this and questioned why she still smoked she simply replied 'its my penance'. I didn't question her further but understood that everyone has something in their past that they may consider wrong and in some way may by their behaviour, inflict some self punishment.
