About The Artwork

Peonies are one of mr favorite flowers. I love how ruffle-y and delicate their petals are - and there are so many! Peonies only grow where I live for a very small window in June. So the peony blossom for me is very rare, and fleeting and therefore, all the more beautiful. I had wanted to capture the delicacy, and number of the petals on a peony, and this shot did it for me. I love also how the pink is just on the edges of the petals. Like a cherry atop a sundae. It was the perfect shot to paint!

I find inspiration in nature. From the places I have traveled, to the Pacific Northwest that I now call home. Each part of the world has a very specific quality of light - the way that it interacts with the environment. I try to capture this quality in my paintings. The trees, the water, and the plants – how do they interact to produce color, shadow and shape? Also important is time. What time of the day is it? Is it the crisp sunrise, the deep sunset, the bright yellow of midday? What time of year is it? Is it the dewy spring? Is it the somber but vibrant autumn? All of these play a role in the specific quality of light that ends up getting expressed onto the canvas. The focus of my work is to bring one’s attention to the depth of a singular subject. By making that subject large and all encompassing, that singularity overtakes you and it becomes everything. You become lost in a flower, in an ocean wave, in leaves on a tree. One is forced to examine what is usually small, or part of a whole, as something that is a world unto itself. It is my hope that by doing this the viewer is forced to appreciate the beauty that is all around us and be humbled by nature. It has always been my hope to share with others the beauty I see through my own eyes in my work. I hope it brings everyone the same joy it brings me.
