edzy edzed Photographic Self-Portrait in Tondo Painting (1990) photographic emulsion, white printing ink, mirrors, gouged plywood 47” diameter I was motivated to try a larger work using “Liquid Light” photo-emulsion (no longer available in Canada) onto a plywood disk with existing pierced holes. I added four more holes to describe a square (as in a square peg in a round hole dynamic) which later would become reflective. After manipulating the surface with fire and wire brushing, I beamed my “mirrored convex image” onto the emulsion with a modified slide projector. It was treated the same way as any black and white print in a dark room. Thinking of the ink as paint, I rolled the ink over the grain of the wood revealing the highlights. This artwork serves me as a reminder of Lucio Fontana slashing through pure white painted canvases as the original inventor revealing the blackened void of the 4th dimension beyond the substrate.

Those ideas persuaded me to attend the University of Victoria where I earned my BFA (Hons) by 1992. The target was to develop a symbolic metalanguage to facilitate deconstructive events while perusing the ideas of painting in Western art history. I have expressed myself conceptually through gouged plywood painting, encaustic painting, kinetic painting, glitter painting, nano painting and pure substrateless painting in a style I think of as reductive but thoughtful.
