About The Artwork

The Piazza di Trastevere forms the heart of this section of Rome. The church of Santa Maria di Trastevere is one of the oldest in Rome with building elements dating back to 220 AD. There has been a fountain here since the eighth century making this, perhaps, the oldest in Rome. I suspect few who animate this square day and night in their lingering or passage think about these things. They gather to meet friends, slip through the great church doors to attend services, dine in one of the many restaurants in the immediate area, or stop for a gelato from the shop on the north side of the square. The steps up to the fountain provide both seating and create a stage, but the square itself is the theater and everyone is both audience and actor. This acrylic painting on a cradled wood panel attempts to convey that liveliness. The paint offers some texture, the color shifts are subtle due to the use of washes and glazes, and the vividness of the painting further “pops” on the wall due to the depth of the work and the flat black color of the panel’s sides.

Barry reports that his earliest memories are of drawing. Paint followed only a few years later. Eventually the enjoyment of producing art in two dimensions melded with other academic strengths to led to a profession in architecture where design was pushed into the third dimension. Even then, the process of creating a building relied on sketches, drawings, and renderings. After growing up in South Arkansas, getting his degree and beginning his profession in Houston, Barry and his family relocated to North Carolina for 27 years. in 1983, the elastic snapped and they are back in Houston where Barry oversaw construction and helped plan for facilities at one of the country's largest community colleges until his retirement in September 2023. Beyond work, Barry has always enjoyed travel and his paintings reflect images that have caught his imagination along the way. While the paintings are based on reality, Barry's work makes countless additions and adjustments to better convey both reality and spirit of the subjects. Post-retirement, Barry is excited to be able to spend much more time traveling and producing new paintings.
