About The Artwork

Coined in a song written in 1911 by a Swedish-born American named Joe Hill, we understand “pie in the sky” as something good and pleasant to contemplate, but very unlikely to be realized. How great does the deck have to be stacked against you before you give up, labeling your dream as pie in the sky? Only you can answer that, and every person has a different one. But we are often too quick to chalk something up as pie in the sky when it really isn’t. It can keep us from even starting. It lets us off the hook, thinking our dream was impossible anyway, because sacrifice and hard work and hope — yes, even hope — hurts sometimes.  Not everything is worth seeing through ’till the end. As we grow, our dreams and desires and priorities can change. But don’t be tricked into stopping just because the odds seem long. Everything is impossible until it isn’t. Yes, the odds may be long. Your stamina may be depleted. Your hope may be dim. But if the cause is great enough and your soul is on board and your motive is pure, keep going. You may just be able to grab that pie and eat it, too.

I’m a professional reminder-er and permission granter who moonlights as an artist, author, and speaker. I enjoy Star Wars, soft t-shirts, and brand new tubes of paint. My mission is to annihilate Adultitis by inspiring, entertaining, and encouraging people to renew their childlike spirit and believe in their dreams. I make art that’s propaganda for what really matters. It often carries a little reminder of something important, such as a feeling, a memory, or a great truth. And whimsy. Whimsy is my favorite. I find inspiration in pop culture, the nostalgia of childhood, and the wisdom of children. My work tends to be optimistic and happy; I’m not cool or trendy enough to be cynical. I mostly make art with acrylic and oil paint, colored pencils, and my trusty Mac. I love incorporating layers of texture to add energy, depth, and humanity. Kim is my wife and partner in crime. Together we homeschool our three weird kids and live in Madison, Wisconsin, where we eat way too many cheese curds. May the Force be with you.
