About The Artwork

This painting, it should have been another painting, it should have told another story and it should have had another title. I almost always start with an idea and a very clear project for each work I make, but for some time now I find myself arguing with what I'm doing. The work was almost finished, I had chosen the colors well, the technique to use, the subject, the idea to propose with the work and the draft of the title but ... I didn't like it. Here the struggle began, a struggle between everything I know, what I can do, what I want to do, and the unknown, what I don't know, I can't do and I never did. The battlefield was the canvas, the weapons: spatulas and colors. The contenders: me with my will on one side and Art with its freedom and its creative power on the other side. The many colors were put and removed, spatulated, scratched, put back, changed, striped, brushed, over and over again until, little by little, a strong, beautiful, unique figure appeared on the canvas. At that moment, I let myself be guided by that figure, by the powerful creative freedom of Art and I definitively left my will, my project. It also seemed like a good project, a nice idea, but "The pink bow on the hat" is Art.

I started painting at the age of five. My mother gave me a large room for painting when I was little. I have always dedicated myself to art. For many years I worked as an illustrator for children's books. In 2002, IBBY Andersen in London included me in their catalogue of the 100 best illustrators in the world. I love all artists, both contemporary and from the past, and in my paintings I am inspired by Mantegna and Caravaggio, the French impressionists and the Italian Macchiaioli. With my paintings, I want to hold that magical moment I experience in front of a landscape, an object or a particular event, and transfer it to the canvas. I love all my paintings like children, and I feel that in each one I have given form to that sense of strength, silence and infinity that permeates everything and inspires my works. Lately I'm deepening my research on light and shape. In particular, I am working on the essentiality of form and the power of light. I do many studies and many sketches before I do a work. I take care of the use of colors very carefully and I tend to be as essential as possible, always leaving free the creative drive that motivates me. Currently the most recent works are included in the Italian National Catalog of Cultural Heritage.
