Pipes of Peace Painting

An expressionistic interpretation of the famous fountain in Piazza Navona, Rome. Cleopatra's needle behind the main figure doubles as a sword for the giant who wrestles with a dolphin. Yet below him, three mythic figures pipe for peace under the surreal ochre-purple sky. The lamps that stand before the distant buildings add drama to the intensity of the night and theme. I was moved to tell a story of war and peace using these great mythic figures. I worked with a series of yellows -ochre, cadmium and lemon yellow together with a purple brought down by burnt umber. Are the figures piping for peace or war? Do we, as Europeans any longer know the difference. The giant wrestles with that most peaceful of animals - the dolphin. And the smaller figures, piping for peace, are clearly mythic and asexual., having no genitalia.
