About The Artwork

Subject: This painting captures Calle Larios, a pedestrian shopping street in Málaga that was inaugurated in 1891. The majority of the street's buildings were designed by Spanish architect Eduardo Strachan Viana-Cárdenas, who was heavily influenced by the architecture of the city of Chicago. At the end of the street stands a statue of Manuel Domingo Larios, the primary project stakeholder who was instrumental in organizing, funding, and executing the new mercantile street. Description: Strong perspectival composition and atmospheric paint emphasizes the bustling nature of the place. The regularity present in the building forms and crowded street scene hint at the juxtaposition inherent in many grand civic spaces which simultaneously present grandiose and aspirational visions of ourselves while concealing the exploitation and power structures inherent in the consolidation of wealth and power which allow their construction. Process: Plein-air drawing, painted in the studio.
