Subject: This painting depicts the vintage crane at the Glorieta Luis de Unzaga at the port of Málaga. Description: This vintage crane is a romantic relic that has outlived its functional use and is now merely a mascot for the hard-working port. Foreshortened perspective, strong colors, and a graphic sensibility emphasize the dislocation and abandonment of this once critical piece of waterfront infrastructure. The sea, which was once so integral to the crane's function, is now out of sight, a poignant reminder of the ways in which the world around us can change and render even the most useful objects obsolete. The painting invites the viewer to reflect on the passage of time and the transience of humankind’s accomplishments. Process: Plein-air drawing, painted in the studio.
