Subject: The painting depicts the Chapel of the Port of Málaga located on Pier Uno, a retail promenade. Originally constructed in 1531 from locally quarried pink sandstone, the chapel has been moved several times, stone by stone, as the port has expanded and changed over the centuries. A relic of a time when the sea was a perilous place, the chapel served as a place of worship for sailors, who faced constant danger in their line of work. Description: Rendered in the muted tones of old stone, in contrast to the more vibrant hues of the touristic setting, the chapel is a reminder of a bygone era when the sea was a place of risk rather than a pleasure destination. A colonnade of bitter orange trees draws the viewer into this quiet place, and are themselves a piece of living history hinting at the protection that their bright fruits offered against scurvy on long sea voyages. Despite the changing world around it, the Chapel of the Port of Málaga remains a still point of reflection, standing as a testament to the passage of time and the enduring nature of human endeavor. Process: Plein-air drawing, painted in the studio.
